If Birmingham has a soul,
it’s currently residing in Digbeth. Once the city’s industrial engine room, it’s now the "creative quarter"—think of it as Shoreditch’s edgier, louder cousin or a Birmingham-style Brick Lane. It’s a labyrinth of Victorian warehouses, world-class street art, and the iconic Custard Factory, where Alfred Bird famously invented egg-free custard in 1837 because his wife was allergic to eggs. Romantic, right?
Tucked right into this historic fabric is 670 Grams, a restaurant named after the birth weight of chef Kray Treadwell’s daughter. Kray (a former Michelin Young Chef of the Year) has created a space that matches the area’s grit: industrial, quirky, and unapologetically cool. When we visited for an early weekend lunch, the vibe was surprisingly quiet—we were the only ones there—but the "fine dining with a twist" experience was in full swing.
The journey starts in the lower-floor lounge with snacks that frankly steal the show. Their "KFC" (Kray Fried Chicken) is a total revelation—crispy, punchy, and roughly ten times better than the Colonel’s best day. It set the bar sky-high, though the mains struggled to maintain that same level of "wow." While the cooking is technically flawless and features clever nods to local heritage (like Bird's Custard and Cadbury), the portions are noticeably small, even by tasting menu standards. The dishes were tasty and thoughtful, but I left feeling more "educated" about Birmingham’s history than truly full.
Rating
Food: 4/5 - The snacks are a 5/5 masterpiece, but the main courses lacked a memorable "wow" factor.
Service: 4/5 - Attentive and friendly, though being the only table made it a very intimate experience.
Decor: 5/5 - Perfectly quirky and industrial; it fits the Digbeth "cool" aesthetic perfectly.
Value: 3/5 - At full price, the small portions make it a tough sell; it’s a much better deal if you find a discount.
Overall: 4/5 - A great experience for foodies who appreciate concept over calories.
Estimated cost per person: £40.00 – £125.00 (Lunch menu) / £125.00+ (Evening menu)

Tasty KrayFC
Tasty and funny snacks
Mains are bit let down overall
Birmingham element custard tart
Verdict: An artistic, high-concept tribute to Birmingham’s culture. The snacks are legendary, but the small main portions might leave you eyeing up a kebab on the way home.
