Crowned as Top 50 British Bakery,
Rating
Food: 4/5 - Beautifully flaky and airy, but missing that rich, decadent butter hit.
Service: 4/5 - Functional and polite, though the "afternoon wind-down" vibe felt a bit rushed.
Decor: 4/5 - Charming, rustic, and very "artisan French" in the heart of B14.
Value: 3/5 - Premium pricing for a product that tasted a bit "stored" rather than fresh.
Overall: 3.75/5 - A good bakery, but perhaps currently a victim of its own massive hype.
Estimated cost per person: £8.00 – £12.00 (Pastry and a quality coffee).
Restaurant Info:
Levain & Cherry is not every day a local spot in King’s Heath gets , and it is the only one in Birmingham to make the prestigious 2026 top list. Naturally, my expectations were higher than a well-proofed sourdough. Founded by Pascal and his partner, Levain & Cherry is famous for its French artisan roots and commitment to traditional methods.
I swung by in the mid-afternoon, but the vibe felt a bit like the party had already ended. The kitchen was packed down and cleaned, and the croissants were being stored in large plastic box. While there’s nothing inherently wrong with that, it’s a bit of a buzzkill when you’re paying a premium price; you really want that "warm from the oven" magic.
Visually, the pastries are stunning—perfectly shaped, beautifully laminated, and sporting a satisfyingly crispy, flaky crust that shatters on impact. However, the flavour didn't quite live up to the looks. For a top-tier bakery, I expected a punch of rich, high-quality butter, but it felt a little muted. Ironically, the real hero was the Mocha. Usually, bakery coffee is an afterthought, but the chocolate here was dark, complex, and clearly premium. It’s a solid bakery, but when you're labeled "the best in the region," the bar is set at perfection.
| Very attractive croissant and pain au chocolat but lacking the butter flavour |
| Artisan bakery with focused items |
Verdict: Technically brilliant pastry work that looks like a work of art, but the flavour profile lacks the buttery soul I expected for the price.
